Zephyr for JIRA is a quality test management tool for any JIRA project. With Zephyr and JIRA, test cases can be created in JIRA and run whenever needed or as part of a test cycle. You can also see and track test metrics in detail.
In the last tutorial of JIRA, we discussed the Zephyr add-on, features of Zephyr, and Installation.

Alright. In this tutorial, we will discuss how to create test cases in JIRA with Zephyr. Once the Zephyr integrates with JIRA, it will appear in the side menu bar.
How to create a test?
To create a test case, follow the steps below:
- To create a new test, click on the Create button located top of the page. A pop-up or create issue page will be displayed to the user.
- Click on the “Project” drop-down field to choose a project.
- From the drop-down list, select the issue type that you want to deal with.
- In the respective fields, enter the required details and other required additional information.
- You can change the fields when you create a test by clicking on the “Configure Fields” tab.
- Click the ‘Create’ button.
- This will create a new test, which will be an issue of type ‘Test.’
- To add test steps and their details, you will need to modify the test issue.
We’ve integrated Zephyr add-ons, but the Issue Type ‘Test’ is not displayed in the drop-down list when the user clicks the drop-down box. As we are required to add this issue type manually. In order to add the ‘Test’ as the issue type, one must log in from the administrative credentials and follow the following steps:
- Choose the project we need to add the “Test” issue type to.
- Click on the ‘Project Settings’ tab in the left menu of the page.
- Then click on the ‘Issues — >Type’ tab.
- Click on the “Actions” field on the right side of the page.
- To get to the ‘Edit issue types’ page, click on the ‘Edit issue types’ option as shown in the below image.
To add the ‘Test’ issue type, please drag and drop it into the Issue Types for the Current Scheme section.
Add Test Steps
- To add test steps and test details, open the test and edit it.
- To view the test details, click on the ‘Test Details’ icon below the test summary.
- Go to the “Test Details” section and add information in the “Test Step,” “Test Data,” and “Expected Result” columns.
- After you add the necessary details, click the “Add Steps” button to add more.
- Continue adding more steps, as required.
Create Test Cycles
After we write the test cases, we need to run them. In order to execute the test cases, we need to create test cycles. To create a new test cycle, follow the following steps:
- Click on the ‘Cycle Summary’ tab under the Zephyr Squad menu.
- Click on the ‘Create New Test Cycle’ button.
- This will show the “Create New Cycle” module, which lets you fill in the fields for the corresponding test cycles.
- When you are done, click on the ‘Save’ button at the bottom of the interface to create the test cycle.
- After you have created your testing cycle, you will be able to see the test cycle in the folder structure on the left-hand side of the interface.
Add Tests to the Test Cycle
1. Choose the test cycle you want to add the tests.
2. Click on the ‘Add Tests’ button.
3. The drop-down list can be used to find the test cases that need to be added to the cycle. We can also specify the ID of the test case to
add it to the list of test cases to be added.
4. Selecting all the test cases you want to add to the testing cycle requires you to pick a person to assign them to.
5. Click on the “Add” button when you’re done choosing and assigning all your test cases.
6. After you add your test cases, you can see them in the table by clicking on the testing cycle and looking at them in the table.
Execute Test Cases
Once the test cases have been added to the test cycle, they must be executed. The following steps are used to execute the test cases:
1. We can execute test cases by using the drop-down list in the ‘Status‘ column of the test execution table within the testing cycle. The individual test that needs to be executed can be done by clicking on the E button.
2. Then execute the individual step of the test by clicking on the drop-down list in the ‘Status‘ column. Select and update the status of the test step and this will execute the individual test step.
